Prevent wisdom tooth problems with a proper evaluation
Wisdom teeth evaluation and extraction in Montreal
Is a wisdom tooth causing discomfort, or are you wondering whether it should be removed? At OraMed Dental Clinic, our team evaluates the position, eruption, and condition of your wisdom teeth to determine the right approach. Depending on the exam findings and your symptoms, monitoring may be suggested or extraction may be recommended. If a procedure is needed, we take the time to explain the steps and the instructions to follow before and after treatment.
When can wisdom teeth be removed?
-
Limit the effect on neighboring teeth: A wisdom tooth that lacks space or grows in the wrong direction can put pressure on the adjacent molars. Removal may be considered to protect nearby structures and tooth alignment.
-
Manage discomfort and inflammation: A difficult eruption can bring sensitivity, swelling, or discomfort at the back of the mouth. Extraction may be suggested when these symptoms are linked to the wisdom tooth.
-
Reduce hard-to-clean areas: When a tooth has only partly come through, food and bacteria can collect around the gum. This can lead to inflammation, infection, or cavities.
-
Protect the bone and adjacent teeth: Some impacted teeth can be linked to changes around the crown, including cyst formation. An evaluation determines whether removal is indicated to preserve the surrounding tissues.
When might an extraction be indicated?
-
Impacted or poorly positioned tooth: A wisdom tooth may stay under the gum, lack room to erupt properly, or be angled toward a neighboring tooth.
-
Partly erupted tooth: An incomplete eruption can create an area that is hard to brush around the tooth and gum, allowing plaque and bacteria to build up.
-
Damage to nearby structures: Extraction may be considered when a wisdom tooth is linked to a cyst, a cavity, or a problem that could affect the adjacent molar.
-
Procedure recommended after evaluation: Even without significant pain, the clinical exam and X-rays may show a situation where removing the tooth is the most appropriate option.
